The term bail bond agent or bail bondsman
is frequently confused with "bail enforcement agent" also known as a bounty hunter. These
titles describe totally different and mutually exclusive positions. Bail bond agents
are people trusted to act as a surety and pledge money or property as bail. Money or property pledged in this manner is used to secure the court
appearance of a defendant. Due to the high risk nature of the bail bond most banks and insurance companies
don't participate in bail bonds. As a result bail bondsman or bail bond agents will typically require
personal property or money be placed as surety against the bond. Bail bond agents and bail enforcement agents are positions unique to the United
States as bail in other countries is usually less and bounty hunting is illegal.
